Brunel, Isambard Kingdom

Ingeniero civil y mecánico británico. Era hijo de Marc Brunel. Su introducción del ferrocarril de trocha ancha, con rieles separados 2 m (7 pies) entre sí, posibilitó alcanzar altas velocidades y proporcionó un gran estímulo al progreso del ferrocarril. Le cupo la responsabilidad de construir más de 1.600 km (1.000 mi) de vía férrea en Gran Bretaña y supervisó también la construcción de líneas férreas en Italia, Australia e India. Su uso de un cajón neumático (de aire comprimido) para sumergir los cimientos de los pilares de un puente contribuyó a la aceptación de las técnicas de aire comprimido en la construcción subacuática y subterránea. Brunel hizo un extraordinario aporte a la ingeniería naval con tres vapores –el Great Western, el Great Britain y el Great Eastern– cada uno de ellos el más grande del mundo a la fecha de su botadura. El Great Western estableció el primer servicio transatlántico regular y el Great Eastern tendió el primer cable transatlántico exitoso.
